A backlog total contains different levels of certainty
BigBear.ai reported $269.6 million of backlog at June 30, 2026. The total is useful only after separating funded work, unfunded contract value and customer options that had not been exercised. Those categories do not carry the same right to payment or the same likelihood of becoming revenue.
Rebuild the total from the filing
Reported fact: The backlog table in the SEC-hosted 10-Q reports funded backlog of $79,415 thousand, unfunded backlog of $31,709 thousand, priced unexercised options of $148,996 thousand and unpriced unexercised options of $9,477 thousand. The comparable December 31, 2025 amounts were $54,859, $57,509, $130,564 and $5,128 thousand.
| Category | June 30, 2026 | Dec. 31, 2025 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Funded | 79,415 | 54,859 | +24,556 |
| Unfunded | 31,709 | 57,509 | -25,800 |
| Priced unexercised options | 148,996 | 130,564 | +18,432 |
| Unpriced unexercised options | 9,477 | 5,128 | +4,349 |
| Total | 269,597 | 248,060 | +21,537 |
Calculation: Total backlog increased $21.537 million, or 8.7%. Funded backlog represented 29.5% of the June total, up from 22.1% at year-end. The two unexercised-option categories totaled $158,473 thousand, or 58.8% of reported backlog.
What each category establishes
Reported fact: The filing defines funded backlog as remaining contract value for which funding is appropriated or otherwise authorized, after previously recognized revenue. Unfunded backlog is contract value for which funding has not been appropriated or authorized. Priced options use negotiated contract values, while unpriced options use company estimates based on customer discussions, current support and negotiated option periods.
The filing says options do not create enforceable rights and obligations until customers exercise them. It also says most federal contracts are not fully funded at award, customers may add funding as work progresses, and the company generally does not deliver beyond appropriated funding.
Interpretation: The increase shows a larger reported pool of awarded work and estimated opportunities, and the mix shifted toward a larger funded share relative to year-end. It does not turn the entire $269.6 million into contracted revenue. Most of the total remained tied to options that customers had not exercised.
Why backlog is not a revenue forecast
Reported fact: BigBear.ai says backlog may not result in actual revenue in any particular period or at all. Its customer contracts can include termination-for-convenience provisions. On termination, recovery may be limited to incurred or committed costs, settlement expenses and profit on completed work. The company also includes, in certain cases, estimates of known opportunities for future awards on programs it already supports.
Limitation: The filing does not provide a conversion schedule from each backlog category to recognized revenue, the margin attached to each item or the probability that an option will be exercised. The calculations above describe the disclosed balance at two dates; they are not a sales forecast, valuation or investment recommendation.
